Abstract

An investigation was undertaken to assess the impact of selection for improvement of egg production on the pattern of mortality in IWN and IWP strains of White Leghorn maintained in the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Poultry for Eggs, Mannuthy Centre. The mortality records from the fifth to nineth generation wero analysed. The results showed that the two strains did not differ significantly in respect of mortality. Hepatitis/Enteritis, Leukosis, Omphalitis, Marek's disease and Coccidiosis were the commonly encountered diseasss in both the strains. The overall mean livability percentage in IWN and 1WP was found to bo quite satisfactory. Since Hepatitis/Enteritis accounted for the highest percentage of mortality, the routine screening of feed samples for aflatoxins and other mycotoxins is warranted.
