Leptospi~•osis is a zoonosis of world wide distribution, caused by several pathogenic species of Leptospira having a broad spectrum of hosts (Parma et ul. , 1997). Every animal which is known to be infected by leptospirosis is considered a possible carrier and disseminator of leptospirosis not only to the same species but also to others including man (Torten, 1979). Among domestic animals, the dogs play an important role in the transmission of leptospirosis to man and other animals. Serological surveys have revealed that the leptospiral agglutinating antibodies can be found in upto 60 per• cent of the canine population throughout the world (Everard, et al., 1987; Venkatraman and Nedunchelliyan, 1993).
