Abstract


The structure and postnatal development of proventriculus in Japanese quail were studied using 72 quails aged from day-old to 60 days. The proventriculus was spindle-shaped and had a mucosa studded with nodules. Lamina propria contained simple tubular glands. Muscularis mucosa consisted of isolated bundles of longitudinal smooth muscle. Compound tubular glands were present in the submucosa. Tunica muscularis consisted of inner and outer longitudinal and middle circular layers of smooth muscle. Outermost was the serosa.
